Not Everyone Is Having A Happy Holiday

While many of us are gearing up and hunkering down for a cozy holiday season, this and so much more is what’s going on in factory farms everywhere. It’s painful to witness, but billions of cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and sheep are living this nightmare, 24/7. I’ve actually seen much worse. I’ve mostly watched slaughterhouse footage without the volume because I can’t bear the screams while they’re being tortured and struggling to live. I actually Read more…

An apology to supermarket employees across the U.S.

To all supermarket employees across the nation, please accept my sincere apologies for making your job any harder than it already is. I know dealing with the general public is not always easy and the last thing you need are random crazies coming in and causing a ruckus when all you’re trying to do is create and maintain a pleasant shopping experience for your customers. And to the store managers, I extend an even more Read more…

Who Are You Wearing?

“Compassion is the fashion, say no to fur!” Back in the 1980’s when I was in my 20’s, and completely not veg in any way, there were three animal cruelty no-no’s that seemed common knowledge, even amongst those of us who were meat and dairy eaters but also wanting to be conscientious of doing the least amount of harm to animals. One was, stay away from veal, because of the suffering of baby male calves Read more…

Nothing says ‘Thanksgiving’ like a supermarket turkey speak-out

Last year was my first Thanksgiving without turkey. I had just gone veg, but not yet fully vegan, and because turkey was such a central part of the holidays, I was scared of “slipping” so I didn’t go anywhere that whole weekend. I also preferred staying home and cooking delicious veg meals because I was newly awakened to the reality of animal cruelty in the meat industry that I just couldn’t bear being around the Read more…

Guilt-Free Mac & Cheese

Hunker down with this one on a chilly fall or winter day! And, it’s a no-brainer for kids. The ‘cheese’ sauce is essentially made of all vegetables and, once it’s been blended together in the food processor, the speckles of green from the broccoli make it look even more fun to eat. The nutritional yeast (which is filled with the essential vitamin B12, a vitamin that most Americans lack, mixed with the other healthy liquid Read more…

Coconut Curry Butternut Squash Soup

I’ve been doing variations of butternut squash soup for years, and, depending on my mood, this one’s my favorite. It’s so simple and SO good! 2 medium-sized butternut squash 2-4 medium-sized sliced leeks 3-5 minced garlic cloves 2 cans coconut milk Heat 1-3 C. water and add 1-2 Tbsp of veggie “Better Than Bouillon” paste, depending on desired consistency and saltiness) to the hot broth until it dissolves  1-3 Tbsp yellow curry powder (to taste) Read more…

Strawberry Banana Smoothie

This is how a new vegan makes a killer smoothie. In a blender: 1-2 fresh frozen bananas cut up, 1 cup fresh frozen strawberries, 3/4 cup almond milk, 1 Tbsp almond butter, 1/2 tsp ground flax seed, light drizzle of maple syrup. Blend on “smoothie” setting. Gulp it down! Be daring. Go vegan.
